The pawns are like seeds; they sprout organically. The pieces in this chess set are designed to have an intuitive rank-order that is communicated by its points. The bishop has two points, the rook has three, the queen has four, and the king has five. The knight is unique, and so its points face downwards. The pawns have no points.
With this design, I wanted to take advantage of a unique boon that comes with 3D printing; specifically, no hassles with undercut surfaces. Look at them again; this would be tricky to manufacture with injection molding. By the way, I painted the colored parts with glow-in-the-dark paint and prototype of the results are pictured at the bottom of this page.
